The stress starts before the grooming does

When owners tell me their pet “hates being groomed,” I ask them to walk me through the whole trip. • No travel. For cats, rabbits and birds especially, the car ride is often the worst part of the entire experience — and it simply does not happen.
• No other animals. A nervous dog does not have to hold itself together in a room of strangers. A prey animal like a rabbit never smells a predator two cages away.
• You stay close. You are steps from the van the whole time. Nothing happens behind a closed door across town, and there is no anxious afternoon waiting for a pickup call.

When a salon still makes sense

I will be fair to salons, because good ones exist. If your dog is confident, social and travels happily, a well-run salon with conscientious staff is a perfectly good choice — some dogs genuinely enjoy the outing. Salons can also suit owners who want to combine grooming with a daycare day.

But if your pet trembles in the car, hides when the carrier appears, or comes home from grooming “not quite themselves,” those are not quirks. They are signals, and they are exactly the cases where bringing the groomer to the pet — instead of the pet to the groomer — changes everything.
